Even until this day! I know I talk a lot about how “clever” search engines are and how it’s nearly impossible to cheat them.

However, there are still a number of factors to consider if you want your SEO to be successful.

Take, for example, page title tags.

Before you groan and go on to another enticing SEO topic, hear me out.

One of the most important aspects of SEO is title tags. They’ve always been that way, and as far as we can tell, they’ll always be that way.

“Title tags are the second most essential on-page component for SEO, after content,” according to Moz.

When it comes to a low-effort/high-results strategy, title tags win hands down. It’s such a minor detail, but it has such a big impact!

You already know how crucial it is to write catchy headlines, but optimizing your titles is also important for SEO.

It will elicit a response from them. They’ll make a decision. It will compel them to do so. It will turn them away. It will teach them something.

There are two major reasons for the importance of page title tags.

First, having a clear title that is related to your page will be seen as a sign of a good page by both people and search engines.

People may skim straight over your content if your title tag isn’t optimized, and search engines may conclude that your page isn’t as good as it could be.

The fact that title tags appear in browser tabs is a second reason for their importance:

So, if someone wants to find your page among all the tabs in their browser, they’ll check for it in the title tag.

If your page is shared on social media, visitors will often see the title tags. For instance, on Facebook, here’s an example of a title tag:

Is it clear why title tags are so crucial? A good title tag will increase your page’s exposure, whilst a bad title tag will cause your page to drop.

To improve your title tags, follow these three simple actions.

  1. Make that your headlines are suitable for title tags.

Let’s take a look at all three.

Step 1: Create a tag for your title.

You might be asking what the difference is between writing a title tag and writing a headline.

Your headline and title tag may have the same exact title in some circumstances. However, there are specific instances where they will not be.

Take a look at this Copyblogger SERP result:

Isn’t the title of the page supposed to be “How Content Marketing Grows Your Business?”

When you get to the website, however, you’ll notice a different title:

On the page, the title is longer and more detailed.

So, why would Copyblogger do anything like this? The reason for this is that the shorter title tag looks better on the SERP and takes less time to read.

The actual title on the website goes into greater depth, which is most likely why they chose it. They gain the advantages of a reduced title tag as well as a descriptive page title.

It’s a deceptive and effective strategy, exactly the kind of SEO I enjoy.

Try to place your focus keyword as close to the beginning of your title as feasible for the greatest results. That way, search engines (as well as users) will notice the keyword right away.

Step 2: Make a tag for your title.

After you’ve written your page title tag, you’ll need to make it the page’s title.

The method you use will be determined by the software that runs your website.

You’ll need to update the HTML directly if you have a custom site. (It’s also quite simple.)

It’s also quite simple if you utilize WordPress.

It can look a little different for you if you use a different CMS or host.

Let’s look at each of these three scenarios and how to generate a title tag for each of them.

Case 1: You have a one-of-a-kind website that isn’t hosted on a CMS.

You can alter your HTML to add titles if your site isn’t housed on a CMS.
